What this trial studies
This observational study aims to identify genetic characteristics that may increase the risk of primary graft dysfunction (PGD) in patients undergoing lung transplantation. PGD is a severe complication that can occur shortly after surgery, affecting up to 25% of lung transplant recipients. Researchers will collect blood samples from both lung donors and recipients before, immediately after, and 24 hours post-surgery to analyze genetic biomarkers associated with PGD. Participants will be monitored for symptoms of PGD for 72 hours following the transplant, with the goal of improving the prediction of PGD risk and potentially increasing the number of suitable lung transplant candidates.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals who are scheduled to undergo lung transplantation.
Not a fit: Patients undergoing multi-organ transplantation, except for heart/lung transplants, may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better prediction of PGD risk, allowing more patients to receive lung transplants and improving overall outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While the approach of identifying genetic factors related to PGD is promising, it is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in previous studies.
