What this trial studies
This study aims to identify and characterize frailty and pre-frailty in individuals aged 50 and older living with HIV. It will utilize electronic medical record-based screening for frailty and comprehensive geriatric assessments, followed by offering customized activity and nutrition plans to some participants. Additionally, the study seeks to validate the electronic frailty index for predicting adverse outcomes and to correlate biomarkers of aging with symptoms of frailty. Participation in blood draws for research purposes is optional.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 50 and older who are living with HIV and are followed by the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Infectious Diseases Specialty Clinic.
Not a fit: Patients under the age of 50 or those unable to complete the required assessments may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved health outcomes and quality of life for older adults living with HIV by addressing frailty.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in addressing frailty in aging populations, but this specific approach targeting older adults with HIV is relatively novel.
