Identifying biomarkers for retinitis pigmentosa severity

Biomarkers for Prognosis in Different Forms of Retinitis Pigmentosa

Observational Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS · NCT06306690

This study is trying to find signs in the eye that show how severe retinitis pigmentosa is by looking at the thickness of a specific layer in the retina in people who have the condition.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to identify biomarkers that correlate the severity of retinitis pigmentosa with the thickness of the retinal pigment epithelium. Patients with genetically confirmed retinitis pigmentosa will undergo a series of comprehensive ophthalmological examinations, including high-resolution imaging and electroretinography. The study will utilize advanced imaging techniques such as HD-OCT and OCT angiography to evaluate the condition of the retina and assess the potential role of the retinal pigment epithelium in disease progression.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older with genetically confirmed retinitis pigmentosa.

Not a fit: Patients with other retinal diseases or significant visual impairment may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide valuable prognostic indicators for patients with retinitis pigmentosa, aiding in the management and treatment of the condition.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies focusing on biomarkers in retinal diseases, this specific approach to correlating RPE thickness with RP severity is relatively novel.
