What this trial studies

This observational study aims to identify potential biomarkers that can aid in the diagnosis and prognosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), particularly focusing on patients with obesity. The research will utilize non-invasive methods such as plasma tests and liver elastography, as current diagnostic practices rely heavily on liver biopsy, which is not feasible for all patients. The study will analyze the relationship between lifestyle factors, obesity, and the progression of liver fibrosis in individuals at risk for chronic liver diseases. By developing a better understanding of these biomarkers, the study seeks to improve early detection and management of NAFLD.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals with a BMI greater than 35 who are eligible for bariatric surgery.

Not a fit: Patients with active liver viral infections, those with alcohol or drug addiction, and incompetent patients may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to non-invasive diagnostic tools that improve early detection and management of NAFLD, potentially reducing the need for liver biopsies.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies exploring biomarkers in liver diseases, this approach focusing specifically on NAFLD and obesity is relatively novel and untested.
