What this trial studies

This mixed-methods project enrolls adolescents and young adults aged 15–29 who have a current or recent cancer diagnosis, including those on therapy, at end of life, or within one year after treatment. Participants complete vignette-based clinical decision-making scenarios and preference assessments, alongside questionnaires or interviews to collect demographic and psychosocial factors. The study links participants' responses to variables associated with treatment decision-making preferences. All activities are conducted in English at Stanford University and exclude individuals with developmental delays that prevent participation.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are English-speaking adolescents and young adults aged 15–29 with a cancer diagnosis (on treatment, end of life, or within one year post-treatment) who are cognitively and physically able to participate.

Not a fit: People who cannot read or speak English, have developmental disorders that prevent participation, or do not want to engage with decision-making scenarios are unlikely to benefit from this project.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help clinicians tailor conversations and decision-making processes to match young patients' preferences, improving satisfaction and care.

How similar studies have performed: Previous vignette- and questionnaire-based research has produced informative, variable results about AYA decision preferences, so this approach builds on established methods rather than testing a novel treatment.
