How sexual activity affects low blood sugar risk in adults with insulin-treated diabetes who use a CGM

"Impact of Sexual Activity on Hypoglycemia Risk in Adults With Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Under Insulin Therapy and Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)"

Observational Medical University of Warsaw · NCT07286500

What this trial studies

This is an observational study that enrolls adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who are treated with insulin and already use a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). Participants will mark the start of sexual activity in their CGM app with a neutral symbol, and researchers will remotely collect CGM data through platforms such as LibreView or Dexcom Clarity. Glucose patterns on days with sexual activity will be compared to days without activity, including changes up to six hours after the event. Participation lasts about three months and requires the ability to operate the CGM app and provide informed consent.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults (≥18 years) with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who are on insulin therapy, use a CGM, are sexually active, and can mark events in their CGM app for three months are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People who are not sexually active during the study period, do not use a CGM, or cannot operate the CGM app are unlikely to benefit from the study findings.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the results could help people with diabetes and their clinicians understand and manage low blood sugar risk around sexual activity, reducing fear and improving quality of life.

How similar studies have performed: This is a novel, under-studied area with little prior systematic research specifically linking sexual activity and hypoglycemia, though related work has examined exercise and exertion effects on glucose.
