How non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is used outside the ICU worldwide
An International Survey on the Use of NIV Outside the ICU (NIV-Safety Study)
Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital · NCT07157215

What this trial studies
This is an international, observational survey asking physicians, nursing officers, and respiratory therapists about their use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) for adult patients treated outside intensive care units. Participants will report which patients receive NIV, device interfaces and settings, staffing and training, clinical outcomes, and perceived barriers to safe delivery. Questionnaires will be distributed across participating hospitals and responses collated centrally by the coordinating investigators. The data will be analyzed to identify common practices, outcomes, and gaps that can inform recommendations for safer, more standardized NIV use beyond the ICU.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are physicians, nursing officers, and respiratory therapists who care for adults with acute or chronic respiratory failure and who use or decide on NIV outside the ICU.
Not a fit: Pediatric patients, those treated exclusively inside intensive care units, or patients whose care teams do not use NIV are unlikely to be directly affected by this survey's findings.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help make NIV use outside ICUs safer and more consistent, potentially reducing intubations and shortening hospital stays.
How similar studies have performed: Clinical trials support NIV benefits in ICU settings, but large international surveys documenting NIV practice outside ICUs are limited, so this approach fills a notable data gap.
