How health literacy relates to recovery after hand or forearm injuries

Examining the Relationship Between Health Literacy Level and Functional Outcomes in Patients With Hand and Forearm Injuries

Pamukkale University · NCT07291492

What this trial studies

Adults referred to a hand rehabilitation unit for hand or forearm injuries will be enrolled and followed for 12 weeks. At baseline their health literacy will be measured and outcomes will include patient-reported outcome measures and objective grip strength. Participants with concomitant shoulder or elbow injuries, prior surgeries for systemic upper-extremity conditions, or employment in health professions are excluded. The analysis will look for associations between health literacy level and both self-reported function and measured strength over the follow-up period.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18–65 who present with hand or forearm injuries and agree to participate, and who can attend follow-up at the hand rehabilitation unit, are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People outside the 18–65 age range, those with shoulder or elbow injuries, systemic upper-extremity conditions, or who work in health professions are excluded and unlikely to benefit from this study's findings.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If a link is found, clinicians could tailor education and rehab plans to patients' literacy to help improve recovery.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research has shown links between health literacy and outcomes in other surgical and musculoskeletal populations, but evidence specifically for hand and forearm injuries is limited.
