What this trial studies

This randomized controlled trial will compare a one-year, home-based multicomponent exercise program based on the ViviFrail model to usual care in older adults undergoing cancer treatment. Participants will be assessed at baseline and after 12, 24, and 48 weeks for walking speed, balance, muscle strength, quality of life, symptoms, and daily activity. The program is delivered for home use with exercises tailored to older adults and safety oversight, while the control group continues routine care. The study enrolls men and women aged 60 or older treated at Hospital Conceição in Porto Alegre who can walk and have medical clearance to exercise.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Men and women aged 60 years or older receiving cancer treatment at Hospital Conceição who can walk (with or without assistance), understand exercise instructions, and have medical clearance to participate are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients who are non-ambulatory, lack the cognitive ability to follow the exercises, miss required assessments, or have medical contraindications to exercise may not receive benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could help older adults on cancer treatment preserve physical function, reduce symptoms, and maintain independence.

How similar studies have performed: Similar multicomponent and home-based exercise programs have improved strength, mobility, and quality of life in older adults and cancer survivors, though evidence specifically during active cancer treatment is more limited.
