What this trial studies

The project analyzes national electronic health records and linked claims to measure variation in prescribing and 30‑day ED/urgent care revisits and hospitalizations after an ED visit for non‑traumatic dental conditions. A random‑effects model will identify patient, provider, hospital, and state factors associated with antibiotic and opioid prescribing. The study also conducts in‑depth interviews with full‑time ED physicians and advanced practice providers to identify perceived barriers and facilitators to managing dental pain and making prescribing decisions. Results will inform a clinical decision support tool designed to guide ED provider management of non‑traumatic dental conditions.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are full‑time emergency department clinicians (physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants) who manage non‑traumatic dental conditions.

Not a fit: Part‑time ED providers and patients with traumatic dental injuries or non‑dental causes of facial pain are unlikely to receive benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this work could reduce inappropriate opioid and antibiotic prescriptions and lower repeat ED visits for people with non‑traumatic dental pain.

How similar studies have performed: Clinical decision support and provider‑focused interventions have reduced inappropriate opioid and antibiotic prescribing in other settings, but provider‑centered approaches specifically for non‑traumatic dental conditions in the ED are limited.
