What this trial studies
The project adapts proven approaches for promoting healthy diet and regular physical activity into a program tailored for cancer survivors and their co-survivors living in persistent poverty. Community members will be engaged to shape the program so it fits local needs and social determinants of health. The intervention focuses on behavior change support around nutrition and exercise and is delivered through the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Eligible participants are English-speaking adults aged 18–89 who live in the Birmingham area and are not currently on primary cancer treatment.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adult cancer survivors or their family/friends aged 18–89 who speak English, live in the Birmingham area or nearby, and are not on primary cancer treatment are the ideal candidates.
Not a fit: People currently receiving primary cancer treatment, those with significant cognitive or hearing impairments that prevent participation, non-English speakers, or those living outside the Birmingham area are unlikely to benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, participants could improve their diet and physical activity, which may enhance overall well-being and lower long-term health risks associated with cancer survivorship.
How similar studies have performed: Exercise and nutrition interventions have improved outcomes for cancer survivors in prior studies, but community-adapted programs specifically targeting persistent poverty areas have been less commonly tested.
