What this trial studies

This pilot uses a group-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) program delivered to families of individuals with special health care needs. The intervention is conducted in Cantonese and requires participants to be able to read and write Chinese. The study will measure feasibility and preliminary effects on parenting stress and psychological flexibility in both caregivers and adults with special needs. Sessions are offered in person at The Salvation Army SKY Family and Child Development Centre in Mong Kok, Hong Kong.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults (18+) who are Cantonese-speaking and can read and write Chinese, including caregivers of children with special needs and adults with special needs, are the intended participants.

Not a fit: People with borderline-or-greater intellectual deficits, significant language limitations, or severe mental, emotional, or behavioral conditions are unlikely to benefit or may be excluded.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, participants may experience reduced parenting stress and greater psychological flexibility that supports daily functioning and value-guided living.

How similar studies have performed: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy has shown benefits in multiple caregiver and stress-related studies, although group ACT programs specifically for adults with special needs and their caregivers are less common and primarily pilot-level.
