Gas6 and soluble MerTK in gum disease

Evaluation of Gas6 and Soluble MerTK Levels in Gingival Crevice Fluid in Individuals With Periodontal Health, Gingivitis, and Periodontitis

Observational Abant Izzet Baysal University · NCT07535177

What this trial studies

This observational study enrolled 90 adults divided into three equal groups: stage III grade B periodontitis, gingivitis, and periodontally healthy individuals. Whole-mouth and site-specific clinical periodontal measures (probing depth, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing, gingival index, plaque index) were recorded. Gingival crevicular fluid and blood serum were collected and levels of Gas6 and soluble MerTK were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Data were compared across groups using non-parametric statistical tests.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults 18 or older with at least 16 natural teeth, who are non-smokers, free of systemic or infectious diseases, and who fit one of the clinical categories (periodontitis, gingivitis, or healthy gums) are the ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People who currently smoke, are pregnant or lactating, have systemic illnesses, recent antibiotic use or recent periodontal treatment, or have fewer than 16 natural teeth would be excluded and are unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, identifying differences in Gas6 and soluble MerTK could point to useful biomarkers for diagnosing or staging periodontal disease.

How similar studies have performed: Related work has linked the Gas6/MerTK pathway to inflammation control in other tissues, but there is limited prior evidence specifically linking these markers to human periodontal disease.
