What this trial studies
This is a randomized controlled experiment conducted at Family Health Centers in the Atakum district of Samsun between January 2024 and January 2025. Eligible postpartum women (baby aged 9–18 months) who are married, sexually active, have a regular menstrual cycle, a primary-school education, and do not use modern contraceptive methods will be randomized to receive sanitary pads with written and visual family planning messages or to a control group that receives no materials. The intervention aims to use packaging as a repeated, low-cost communication channel to influence knowledge and attitudes about family planning. Outcomes will compare changes in knowledge and attitude measures between the intervention and control groups using the planned sample size of roughly 39 participants per arm (with additional participants to increase power).
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are married, sexually active postpartum women with babies aged 9–18 months who have at least a primary school education, use a smartphone, are not using modern contraceptive methods, and can attend the Family Health Centers in Atakum.
Not a fit: Women already using modern family planning methods, those who received postpartum family planning training, or those with medical conditions or surgeries affecting fertility or the menstrual cycle are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, printing family planning information on sanitary pad packaging could increase women's knowledge and positive attitudes about modern contraception and be a low-cost way to promote uptake.
How similar studies have performed: Health messaging via product packaging (for example cigarette warnings) has influenced behavior in other contexts, but using sanitary pad packaging specifically for family planning is novel with limited prior evidence.
