What this trial studies

This observational project will identify new cases of dermatomyositis in Guadeloupe and characterize the disease in an overseas Caribbean population. Adults meeting the 2003 ENMC diagnostic criteria who have parents or grandparents from the Caribbean and who reside in Guadeloupe will be enrolled after giving informed consent. Investigators will collect clinical, laboratory, imaging, cancer-screening, and diagnostic-timeline data to document visceral involvement and severity at diagnosis. Statistical analysis will look for demographic, ancestral, diagnostic delay, and clinical factors associated with more severe presentations to inform earlier, tailored management.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults (16 years or older) living in Guadeloupe with dermatomyositis diagnosed per the 2003 ENMC criteria who have parents or grandparents from the Caribbean, are affiliated with a social security scheme, and can provide informed consent are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients who began intravenous immunoglobulins, corticosteroids, or immunosuppressants within the month before diagnosis, those under legal protection or deprived of liberty, or those not resident in Guadeloupe or without Caribbean ancestry are unlikely to be eligible or to directly benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help clinicians identify higher-risk patients earlier and tailor care to reduce complications and improve outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: This approach is largely novel for Caribbean dermatomyositis, although similar observational work has identified unusually severe phenotypes in other autoimmune diseases in overseas populations.
