Exploring the molecular causes of cataracts

The Molecular Pathogenesis Study of Cataract

Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University · NCT05682001

This study is trying to understand the molecular causes of cataracts by looking at lens samples from people with diabetes and age-related cataracts to see how certain RNA changes might affect their development.

What this trial studies

This study investigates the molecular pathogenesis of cataracts by collecting anterior lens capsules from patients with diabetic cataracts and age-related cataracts, as well as from transparent cadaveric eyes. It employs M6A epitranscriptomic microarray techniques to analyze altered m6A modifications and identify differentially expressed mRNAs. The research aims to predict the role of dysregulated m6A modification levels through various bioinformatics analyses, including Gene Ontology and KEGG pathway enrichment. Additionally, real-time polymerase chain reaction will be used to assess the expression levels of RNA methyltransferases, demethylases, and readers.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients with diabetic cataracts who have undergone cataract surgery.

Not a fit: Patients with other eye diseases or those who have undergone other eye surgeries may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to a better understanding of cataract development and potential new treatment options.

How similar studies have performed: While this approach is innovative, similar studies exploring molecular mechanisms of cataracts have shown promise in understanding the condition.
