What this trial studies
This observational study aims to investigate the relationship between nutritional status, hand grip strength, and fatigue in hospitalized older adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It focuses on understanding how malnutrition may contribute to decreased muscle strength and increased fatigue, which can significantly affect the quality of life and diabetes management in this population. Using structured questionnaires and a handgrip dynamometer, the study will collect data to explore these correlations and provide insights for future clinical care. The research is particularly relevant given the rising prevalence of diabetes among the elderly in Taiwan.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 60 and above who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus and are conscious and willing to participate.
Not a fit: Patients with cognitive impairments, those unable to communicate, or individuals undergoing active cancer treatment may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved clinical care strategies that enhance the quality of life for elderly patients with type 2 diabetes by addressing fatigue through better nutritional management.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited research specifically targeting this demographic in Taiwan, previous studies have indicated a correlation between nutritional status, muscle strength, and fatigue in older adults, suggesting potential for success in this approach.
