What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the relationship between the pathological features of esophageal achalasia and the prognosis following per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM). Participants with achalasia are categorized into three subtypes based on high-resolution manometry, and their esophageal muscular layers are analyzed for pathological characteristics. The study aims to understand how these features influence treatment outcomes, particularly focusing on the degeneration of nerve plexus and the presence of inflammatory cells. By correlating these findings with clinical outcomes, the research seeks to enhance the understanding of achalasia and improve patient management.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 to 80 who have been diagnosed with achalasia and are eligible for POEM treatment.

Not a fit: Patients who have previously undergone treatment for achalasia or have other significant esophageal conditions may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved treatment strategies for patients with achalasia, enhancing surgical outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have indicated varying success in understanding the relationship between achalasia pathology and treatment outcomes, but this specific approach appears to be novel.
