Exploring genetic factors in retroperitoneal liposarcoma recurrences
Characterization of the Genomic Risk Underlying Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma
Fox Chase Cancer Center · NCT06436846
This study is trying to see if changes in the fat around a type of cancer called retroperitoneal liposarcoma can help explain why it comes back after treatment.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to investigate the biological mechanisms behind recurrences of retroperitoneal liposarcoma, a type of soft tissue sarcoma. It hypothesizes that normal-appearing retroperitoneal fat may contain genetic changes that increase the risk of future tumor development. To test this hypothesis, researchers will collect samples of retroperitoneal fat from areas near and distant from the primary tumor during standard surgical procedures. These samples will undergo genetic analysis to identify potential predisposing factors for liposarcoma recurrence.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include adult patients with histologically confirmed retroperitoneal liposarcoma who are scheduled for surgical resection.
Not a fit: Patients with prior surgical anatomy that complicates fat sampling in the retroperitoneum may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and management of retroperitoneal liposarcoma, potentially reducing recurrence rates.
How similar studies have performed: While this approach is innovative, similar studies exploring genetic factors in tumor recurrence have shown promise in other cancer types.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Adult patients (age ≥18 years). * Histologically confirmed retroperitoneal liposarcoma via preoperative biopsy, or cross-sectional imaging suspicious for liposarcoma with planned surgical resection * Will be undergoing surgical resection for treatment of primary or recurrent disease * Have provided informed consent to participate in this study Exclusion Criteria: • Prior surgical anatomy which makes sampling of remote areas of the retroperitoneum technically impossible or clinically undesirable for safety reasons
