Exploring genetic factors in malignant pleural mesothelioma

Genetic Susceptibility in MAlignant Pleural Mesothelioma: Clinical Implication of GermliNE variaTionS

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the genetic susceptibility of individuals to malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), particularly focusing on germline variations and their clinical implications. The study aims to understand how asbestos exposure interacts with genetic predispositions to influence the development of MPM. By analyzing patients diagnosed with MPM and former asbestos-exposed healthy subjects, the research seeks to uncover potential genetic markers that could inform future therapeutic strategies. The study is set in the Pavia province, an area with ongoing asbestos exposure and a rising incidence of MPM.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults aged 18 and older with a documented diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma or former asbestos-exposed healthy individuals.

Not a fit: Patients without a history of asbestos exposure or those under 18 years old may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding of genetic factors in MPM, potentially guiding personalized treatment approaches.

How similar studies have performed: While the role of germline changes in MPM is largely unexplored, similar studies in other cancers have shown promising results in identifying genetic predispositions.
