Exploring GCase Activity in Dementia with Lewy Bodies
Exploration of Glucocerebrosidase Activity to Identify a Subpopulation Eligible for a Therapeutic Trial in Dementia With Lewy Bodies
This study is testing if people with dementia with Lewy bodies have lower levels of a specific enzyme compared to healthy individuals, to see if this could help guide new treatments.

What this trial studies
This research investigates the activity of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) to determine if decreased activity is present. The study involves comparing glucocerebrosidase activity between DLB patients and healthy controls, while also examining genetic variants of the GBA gene. Clinical characteristics such as motor and cognitive scales will be correlated with enzyme activity. The findings may provide insights into potential therapeutic approaches using existing treatments for Gaucher disease.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals aged 50 and older diagnosed with dementia with Lewy bodies.
Not a fit: Patients with other neurodegenerative diseases or Gaucher disease may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to new therapeutic options for patients with dementia with Lewy bodies.
How similar studies have performed: While this approach is novel in the context of dementia with Lewy bodies, similar studies have shown success in understanding glucocerebrosidase activity in related conditions.
