Exploring a new biomarker for heart disease in schizophrenia patients
The Protein Disrupted in Schizophrenia 1 (DISC1) as a Novel Biomarker for Cardiac Disease - The Link Between DISC1 and Cardiac Function in Patients With Schizophrenia
This study is testing if a specific marker in the blood can help us understand heart problems in people with schizophrenia.

What this trial studies
This study investigates the relationship between DISC1 RNA expression levels and cardiac function in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. Eligible participants will undergo a series of assessments, including interviews, questionnaires, and clinical evaluations. Blood and skin samples will be collected, and cardiac function will be assessed using electrocardiography, echocardiography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The goal is to identify potential biomarkers that could improve understanding and treatment of cardiac issues in this population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia or related disorders who can provide informed consent.
Not a fit: Patients with a history of cancer, current pregnancy, or those who are less than 6 months postpartum may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved cardiac care and monitoring for patients with schizophrenia.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of using DISC1 as a biomarker is novel, similar studies have explored biomarkers in cardiac disease, indicating potential for success.
