Exercise training for patients with coronary artery disease
Effect of a Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Program on Atherosclerosis, Endothelial Function and Inflammation in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease

What this trial studies
This clinical trial involves patients aged 40-70 with coronary artery disease (CAD) who will participate in a 12-week exercise training program, meeting three times a week. A control group of healthy individuals will also be included for comparison. Evaluations will occur at baseline and after the intervention, assessing carotid artery thickness and endothelial function, along with blood sample analysis for various metabolites and inflammatory markers. The study aims to understand the effects of exercise on cardiovascular health in CAD patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals aged 40-70 with a diagnosis of coronary artery disease or healthy adults without CAD evidence.
Not a fit: Patients with heart failure, pulmonary disease, or those who regularly exercise may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve rehabilitation strategies for patients with coronary artery disease, enhancing their cardiovascular health and quality of life.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown positive outcomes with exercise interventions in coronary artery disease, suggesting this approach is promising.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Eligible CAD patients will be those aged 40 to 70 years, of both sexes, entering the cardiac rehabilitation program at HUPE. CAD will be defined as any acute coronary syndrome, including myocardial infarction with and without ST-segment elevation, and unstable angina (all defined by characteristic histories, electrocardiographic abnormalities, and cardiac enzyme abnormalities), or obstructive CAD diagnosed via coronary angiography (defined as ≥ 50% stenosis of any epicardial coronary artery) in patients with stable angina. * Healthy controls: adults aged 40 to 70 years, of both sexes, without CAD evidence. Exclusion Criteria: * diagnosis of heart failure, pulmonary disease, Chagas disease, or tuberculosis * regular physical exercise practice (≥ 3 days/week for 30 min) over the past 6 months * malnutrition (body mass index \[BMI\] \< 18.5 kg/m²) * smoking * obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²)
