What this trial studies

This observational study aims to analyze the microbiological diversity present in the exhaled air of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and those without the condition. Participants will be recruited during medical visits in the Departments of Pneumology and Occupational and Environmental Pathologies, where their clinical data, health status, and smoking history will be collected. Exhalation samples will be taken from different groups based on their health status, age, and smoking habits, with a follow-up collection scheduled for one year later.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults over 18 with a diagnosis of COPD or healthy individuals aged 18-30 and 45-70 without COPD.

Not a fit: Patients with chronic infectious pulmonary conditions or those on specific medications may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of the microbiome's role in COPD, potentially leading to improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

How similar studies have performed: While studies on microbiological diversity in respiratory conditions exist, this specific approach focusing on exhaled air in both COPD and non-COPD patients is relatively novel.
