Examining the link between serum albumin levels and hepatic encephalopathy severity in chronic liver disease patients

Correlation Between Serum Albumin Level and Severity of Hepatic Encephalopathy in Patients With Chronic Liver Disease in Sohag University Hospital

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to assess the correlation between serum albumin levels and the severity of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in patients with chronic liver disease. A sample size of 100-150 patients will be evaluated to ensure adequate statistical power, with assessments including Glasgow Coma Scale scores and various laboratory investigations. The study will also consider clinical characteristics such as prior HE episodes, presence of ascites, and other complications related to chronic liver disease.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 18 years old with confirmed chronic liver disease and diagnosed hepatic encephalopathy.

Not a fit: Patients with acute liver failure, chronic renal failure on dialysis, or active malignancy may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of how serum albumin levels impact the clinical course and outcomes of hepatic encephalopathy, potentially leading to improved management strategies.

How similar studies have performed: While the correlation between serum albumin levels and hepatic encephalopathy has been explored in other studies, this specific approach focusing on a defined patient population is relatively novel.
