What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess the prevalence of respiratory sarcopenia among institutionalized older adults in the Murcia region. Approximately 120 participants from five residences will be followed for one year, with evaluations including sociodemographic and clinical variables, physical function tests, and respiratory force measurements. The study will utilize various statistical methods, including logistic regression and survival analysis, to analyze the collected data and understand the impact of respiratory sarcopenia on this population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are older adults with functional ambulation or wheelchair use, preserved cognitive status, and the ability to perform respiratory tests.
Not a fit: Patients with existing respiratory diseases, serious orthopedic conditions, or dementia may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of respiratory sarcopenia, leading to better management strategies for older adults in care facilities.
How similar studies have performed: While studies on sarcopenia exist, this specific focus on respiratory sarcopenia in institutionalized older adults is relatively novel.
