Examining median nerve variations in carpal tunnel syndrome patients

Sonographic Examination of Median Nerve Variations and Characteristics Observed in Healthy and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Patients

Ankara Etlik City Hospital · NCT06538779

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the prevalence of bifid median nerve variations in patients diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) compared to asymptomatic individuals. It will include patients who have been electrophysiologically diagnosed with CTS at Etlik City Hospital's physical therapy outpatient clinic. Over the course of one year, the study will assess demographic and clinical characteristics, pain levels, symptom severity, and functional status using various measurement tools, including ultrasound and electromyography. The goal is to determine if median nerve variations are predisposing factors for CTS.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals over 18 years old who have typical symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome lasting longer than three months and have been diagnosed with CTS via electromyography.

Not a fit: Patients with a history of polyneuropathy, brachial plexopathy, or other specified conditions, as well as those who have undergone wrist surgery, may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of the anatomical variations associated with carpal tunnel syndrome, potentially leading to improved diagnostic and treatment strategies.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific examination of bifid median nerve variations in CTS patients may be novel, similar studies have explored median nerve anatomy and its implications in carpal tunnel syndrome.
