What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the long-term health outcomes of former competitive athletes, particularly focusing on those with prior knee injuries, compared to non-athlete controls. It aims to assess various health indicators, including strength, function, physical activity levels, dietary patterns, and cardiometabolic health among participants aged 18-25 and 40-64. The study will also explore how sedentary behavior and physical activity patterns differ between current athletes and non-athletes, as well as track changes in these variables over time. The overarching goal is to understand how prior injuries and inactivity contribute to poor health in midlife.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include current or former collegiate varsity athletes aged 18-25 or 40-64, as well as non-athlete controls within the same age ranges.

Not a fit: Patients with neurologic or degenerative diseases that impair function, those who are pregnant, or individuals with lower extremity joint replacements will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into how to improve long-term health outcomes for former athletes and inform interventions to mitigate risks associated with past injuries and sedentary behavior.

How similar studies have performed: While this study explores a specific aspect of health in former athletes, similar studies have shown that understanding the impact of injuries and physical activity on long-term health can lead to meaningful insights and interventions.
