Evaluating the microbiome's role in predicting acute pancreatitis severity
Pancreatitis - Microbiome as Predictor of Severity II
University Medical Center Goettingen · NCT06508502
This study is trying to see if the bacteria in the gut can help predict how severe acute pancreatitis will be for patients.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess the orointestinal microbiome and microbial-derived metabolome in patients diagnosed with acute pancreatitis to determine their potential as biomarkers for disease severity. Within 48 hours of hospital admission, buccal and rectal swabs, as well as stool and plasma samples, will be collected from participants. The study seeks to validate previous findings that suggest the microbiome can predict the course of acute pancreatitis more effectively than established clinical scores. By analyzing the microbiome's impact on disease severity, the research hopes to provide insights into the underlying mechanisms of acute pancreatitis.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older who have been diagnosed with acute pancreatitis within the last 48 hours.
Not a fit: Patients with recurrent acute pancreatitis or signs of chronic pancreatitis may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved prediction of acute pancreatitis severity, allowing for better patient management and treatment strategies.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have indicated that the microbiome may serve as a superior marker for predicting the severity of acute pancreatitis, suggesting a promising avenue for further investigation.
