What this trial studies
This observational study investigates the effects of delaying elective surgery in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) on their health outcomes and quality of life. It focuses on patients who have experienced treatment failure and are awaiting surgery, particularly in the context of delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The study aims to assess how prolonged waiting times for surgery may lead to complications and affect health economics. Data will be collected from patients who had planned surgeries at Sahlgrenska University Hospital between 2017 and 2021.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older with inflammatory bowel disease who have planned surgery at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
Not a fit: Patients undergoing cancer surgery will not benefit from this study as they are excluded from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into optimal timing for surgery in IBD patients, potentially improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
How similar studies have performed: While there may be studies on surgical timing in IBD, this specific focus on the impact of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic is relatively novel.
