What this trial studies

This clinical trial investigates how different rationales provided with open-label placebos affect pain levels in patients with chronic low back pain. Participants will be assigned to various groups receiving either a standard rationale, mindfulness rationale, or no rationale while taking an open-label placebo, and their outcomes will be compared to those receiving no treatment. The study also aims to assess the impact of these rationales on prescription opioid use. By understanding the influence of rationales, the trial seeks to enhance the effectiveness of placebo treatments.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older who experience chronic low back pain lasting at least three months.

Not a fit: Patients with chronic pain due to cancer or those currently receiving worker's compensation may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a non-invasive and cost-effective approach to managing chronic pain, potentially reducing reliance on prescription opioids.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promising results with open-label placebos, suggesting that this approach could be effective, although the specific use of rationales is less commonly tested.
