Evaluating shoulder joint involvement in axial spondyloarthritis patients using ultrasound
Ultrasonographic Evaluation of the Shoulder Joint in Patients with Axial Spondyloarthritis
This study is testing whether ultrasound can help find inflammation in the shoulder joints of people with axial spondyloarthritis to see if it relates to more severe disease.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess the involvement of shoulder joints in patients diagnosed with axial spondyloarthritis (axial SpA) through the use of ultrasound imaging. By comparing the ultrasound findings of these patients with those of healthy controls, the study seeks to identify inflammatory changes that may indicate a more severe progression of the disease. Axial SpA is a chronic inflammatory condition that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints, but can also involve peripheral joints like the shoulders. The use of ultrasound is a non-invasive and effective method for early detection of inflammation, which can help in timely treatment and management of the condition.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients aged 18-65 with a diagnosis of axial spondyloarthritis, either radiographic or non-radiographic.
Not a fit: Patients outside the age range of 18-65, those with a history of shoulder trauma or surgery, or those with malignancy or pregnancy may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to earlier detection and better management of shoulder involvement in axial spondyloarthritis, potentially reducing disease progression and improving patient outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in using ultrasound for early detection of inflammation in inflammatory rheumatic diseases, making this approach both relevant and promising.
