Evaluating sensory-motor behavior in preterm newborns

Assessment of the Behavior of the Preterm Newborn: Discriminative and Predictive Capacity of the Sensory-motor Behavior Observation Grid

Observational University Hospital, Geneva · NCT05898295

This study is trying to see how preterm babies move and respond to their surroundings to find out if these early behaviors can predict their development later on.

What this trial studies

This project aims to assess the sensory-motor behavior of preterm infants using the Observation of Sensory-Motor Behavior (OSMB) grid. The study will involve 65 preterm infants during different care phases and an additional 100 infants during sensorimotor assessments at specific gestational ages. The OSMB scores will be compared to the Bayley III scale scores at 6 months corrected for prematurity to evaluate predictive capacity for later psychomotor development.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are preterm infants born before 37 weeks of gestation who are hospitalized in the Geneva Hospital NICU.

Not a fit: Patients who are not preterm or those who do not meet the language requirement of having at least one French-speaking parent may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance early identification of developmental delays in preterm infants, leading to timely interventions.

How similar studies have performed: While similar observational approaches have been utilized, this specific evaluation of the OSMB grid in preterm infants is relatively novel.
