Evaluating protein levels in children undergoing cardiac surgery

Evaluation of the Levels of O-GlcNAcylation of Cardiac and Blood Proteins in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery and Identification of Therapeutic Targets

What this trial studies

This observational study focuses on children aged 0 to 17 years who are undergoing cardiac surgery with extracorporeal circulation (ECC). It aims to evaluate the levels of blood and cardiac protein O-GlcNAcylation, which may play a role in the inflammatory response and complications associated with ECC. The study seeks to understand how these protein levels correlate with postoperative outcomes, particularly in relation to low cardiac output syndrome and other complications. By identifying potential biomarkers, the research could pave the way for new therapeutic strategies to improve patient outcomes following cardiac surgery.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are children aged 0 to 17 years who are scheduled for cardiac surgery involving extracorporeal circulation.

Not a fit: Patients with infections, fever, immune deficiencies, autoimmune diseases, metabolic diseases, hematological diseases, or genetic diseases may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved management strategies for children undergoing cardiac surgery, potentially reducing complications and enhancing recovery.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of evaluating O-GlcNAcylation in this context may be novel, studies on inflammatory responses and cardiac surgery complications have shown varying degrees of success.
