Evaluating kidney injury in COVID-19 patients
The KIDCOV Study: ASSESSMENT of SARS-CoV-2 Without HOSPITALIZATION as a RISK FACTOR for ACUTE KIDNEY INJURY
This study is testing how mild COVID-19 might affect kidney health in adults, both those who had the virus and those who didn't, by looking at urine samples over a year.

What this trial studies
KIDCOV is a longitudinal cohort study that aims to assess the impact of mild COVID-19 on kidney injury in both COVID-19-positive and negative adults. Participants will be recruited from seven academic medical centers across California, Michigan, and Illinois, and will provide urine samples at 2, 6, and 12 months after their PCR test. The study will analyze various urinary biomarkers to identify episodes of kidney injury, with a focus on understanding the risk factors associated with COVID-19-related kidney damage. This research is crucial for developing preventative measures and targeted therapies for kidney injury linked to COVID-19.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults aged 18 and older who have had a PCR-based COVID-19 test within the past 4 weeks.
Not a fit: Patients who have been hospitalized within 4 weeks of their SARS-CoV-2 test or have a history of kidney transplant or dialysis may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to early detection and prevention of kidney injury in COVID-19 patients, improving patient outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in evaluating the impact of COVID-19 on various health outcomes, but this specific focus on kidney injury is relatively novel.
