What this trial studies

This observational study aims to prospectively assess the prevalence and outcomes of viral and Chlamydia pneumoniae infections in lung transplant recipients. Patients will be monitored by pulmonologists, and their blood and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples will be collected for analysis. The study will investigate the correlation between C. pneumoniae infection and the development of bronchiolitis obliterans, a common complication after lung transplantation. Additionally, the research will explore the potential to predict infections and rejection through tissue samples obtained during standard bronchoscopy procedures.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals who have undergone or are scheduled to undergo lung transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Not a fit: Patients who are not willing to participate in the research study will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved management of infections and rejection in lung transplant patients, enhancing their overall outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in understanding infections in transplant populations, but this specific approach to correlating C. pneumoniae with bronchiolitis obliterans is novel.
