What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess the diagnostic reliability of blood cultures taken from different sources, including central venous catheters, dialysis machines, and peripheral veins, in hemodialysis patients suspected of having catheter-related bloodstream infections. It will compare the timing and rates of bacterial growth from these sources to identify the most effective method for diagnosing infections. Additionally, the study will monitor changes in parathyroid hormone levels during acute infections to determine their correlation with adverse outcomes such as complications and mortality. The findings may enhance monitoring and treatment strategies for dialysis patients facing infections.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are hemodialysis patients over the age of 18 who are hospitalized due to sepsis.
Not a fit: Patients with cognitive impairments who cannot provide informed consent will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved diagnostic methods and treatment strategies for infections in dialysis patients, potentially reducing morbidity and mortality.
How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored infection diagnosis in dialysis patients, this specific approach of comparing multiple blood culture sources is relatively novel.
