Evaluating human neuron activity using brain tissue slices.

Inside a Neuron - Ex Vivo Evaluation of Cerebral and Cerebellar Neuronal Activity Through Electrophysiological and Imaging Techniques on Human Tissue from Surgical Activity.

Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo di Pavia · NCT06896331

This study is testing how human brain cells work by using slices of brain tissue from surgery to see how they respond to different signals and if their behavior changes in disease.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to understand the functioning of human neurons by utilizing brain tissue slices obtained during neurosurgical procedures. By employing advanced techniques such as patch-clamp and high-density microelectrode arrays (HD-MEA), researchers will analyze how these neurons respond to various inputs and how their functioning may differ in pathological conditions. This approach allows for a more accurate representation of human neuronal activity compared to traditional animal models, potentially leading to new therapeutic insights.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients with a primary or secondary brain or cerebellum tumor who are scheduled for partial resection.

Not a fit: Patients who are only undergoing a biopsy for their brain or cerebellum tumor may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance our understanding of human neural function and inform future treatments for neurological disorders.

How similar studies have performed: While studies using animal models have shown success with similar techniques, this approach using human tissue is relatively novel and untested.
