Evaluating Cascade Screening for High Lipoprotein(a) Levels

Evaluation of Cascade Screening for Elevated Lipoprotein(a) in Relatives to Patients With Atherosclerotic Coronary Artery Disease

What this trial studies

This project aims to assess how elevated levels of lipoprotein(a) in patients with atherosclerotic coronary artery disease affect their first- and second-degree relatives. By utilizing cascade screening, the study will invite relatives of patients with high Lp(a) to undergo testing for this hereditary risk factor. The research will be conducted across six hospitals in Sweden, focusing on the genetic implications of Lp(a) levels and their relationship to cardiovascular disease. The findings could provide insights into the effectiveness of cascade screening for identifying at-risk individuals.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals with established atherosclerotic coronary artery disease who are participating in the clinical health care development project.

Not a fit: Patients diagnosed with familial hypercholesterolemia or chronic kidney disease stage 4 or higher may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to earlier identification and management of cardiovascular risk in relatives of affected patients.

How similar studies have performed: While cascade screening has been effective for familial hypercholesterolemia, its application for elevated Lp(a) levels is novel and untested.
