What this trial studies

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the Enhancing Child Engagement in Goal Setting (ENGAGE) approach in improving therapy outcomes for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. By utilizing a pragmatic, cluster randomized controlled trial design, therapists will be trained in either the ENGAGE method or standard care, with outcomes measured in terms of children's engagement, functional abilities, and quality of life. The study will also analyze the cost-effectiveness and service utilization of the ENGAGE approach compared to usual practices. A total of 96 children aged 5-12 years will participate across six rehabilitation sites.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are children aged 5-12 years with neurodevelopmental disabilities who are referred for physical or occupational therapy.

Not a fit: Patients with progressive conditions or uncontrolled seizures may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could enhance children's engagement in therapy and improve their overall functional abilities and quality of life.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using goal-setting strategies in rehabilitation, but the ENGAGE approach is a novel application specifically targeting child engagement.
