What this trial studies
This observational study assesses the spatial hearing abilities of military personnel who have experienced acoustic trauma. Using a novel virtual reality system called SPHERE, the study aims to objectively measure sound localization capabilities in individuals with hearing deficits. Participants will undergo routine audiometric tests alongside the SPHERE protocol to quantify their spatial hearing impairments. The goal is to better understand the challenges faced by these soldiers in identifying sound sources in their environment.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include active or reserve military personnel aged 18 to 65 with a diagnosis of noise trauma for at least one month.
Not a fit: Patients with known neurological or psychiatric disorders, visual disorders, or those under court protection may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved assessment and management strategies for soldiers suffering from hearing loss due to acoustic trauma.
How similar studies have performed: While the approach using virtual reality for assessing spatial hearing is innovative, similar studies have not been widely reported, making this a novel exploration.
