Epidemiology and care for dialysis in ICU patients with severe acute kidney injury in Latin America
Epidemiology and Processes of Care for Renal Replacement Therapy in Acute Kidney Injury in Latin America
This project will collect and compare data on adults in ICUs across Latin America who need dialysis for severe acute kidney injury to see how they are treated and what outcomes they have.

What this trial studies
This is an international, multicenter observational registry enrolling adults with KDIGO stage 3 acute kidney injury who start renal replacement therapy around the time of ICU admission in Latin America. The study will capture standardized clinical, laboratory, treatment, process-of-care, and outcome data and pool them into a comprehensive database. Investigators will compare processes of care and outcomes between countries and analyze how demographic, clinical, and socioeconomic factors influence patient trajectories. The dataset is intended to support regional benchmarking and to be a resource for future clinical research and guideline development.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (≥18) admitted to participating ICUs with new KDIGO stage 3 acute kidney injury who initiate renal replacement therapy no earlier than 3 days before and no later than 7 days after ICU admission, and who are not chronic dialysis or transplant recipients.
Not a fit: Patients on maintenance dialysis, kidney transplant recipients, those with glomerulonephritis, pediatric patients, and patients transferred already receiving ongoing RRT are excluded and would not benefit from enrollment.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the registry could reveal care and outcome differences across Latin America and guide changes that reduce complications and deaths for patients with AKI requiring RRT.
How similar studies have performed: Registry-based observational studies in high-income settings have clarified AKI-RRT practices and outcomes, but comprehensive multicountry data from Latin America remain limited.
