Environmental exposures, including cannabis, and lung cancer

Environment and Lung Cancer

Not applicable Interventional Centre Chirurgical Marie Lannelongue · NCT05119244

What this trial studies

This project collects blood and hair samples from patients aged 18–59 treated for primary lung cancer at three French hospitals to measure markers of cannabis exposure and other environmental carcinogens. Samples will be analyzed to quantify toxic compounds and reconstruct exposure histories alongside clinical data. The work responds to mixed prior evidence: toxicology shows high concentrations of carcinogens in cannabis smoke while epidemiology has been largely reassuring. By adding biomarker data from treated patients, the study aims to clarify possible relationships between cannabis exposure and lung carcinogenesis.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18 to 59 treated for primary lung cancer at one of the participating hospitals who agree to participate are eligible.

Not a fit: People older than 59, those not treated at the listed hospitals, or those who do not consent would not be eligible and therefore would not benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the study could improve understanding of whether cannabis exposure contributes to lung cancer and help guide prevention advice and patient counseling.

How similar studies have performed: Previous human studies have generally not shown a clear link between cannabis smoking and lung cancer while laboratory analyses find higher carcinogen concentrations in cannabis smoke, so human biomarker data remain limited and this approach is relatively novel.
