What this trial studies

This observational study aims to explore how increasing the involvement of fathers and partners in family-integrated care (FICare) affects their mental health and the mental health of mothers during the first six weeks after the discharge of preterm infants. The study will gather baseline data on fathers' experiences and mental health while their infants are in the neonatal unit and assess the impact of improved engagement through validated questionnaires and qualitative interviews. It will involve 20 families with infants born at less than 33 weeks gestation across two neonatal units in London.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are parents of preterm infants born between 22 and 32 weeks gestation who are willing to participate actively in their care.

Not a fit: Parents of infants with life-limiting conditions or those who are unlikely to survive will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve the mental health and well-being of both fathers and mothers, leading to better family dynamics and support for preterm infants.

How similar studies have performed: While this approach is relatively novel, previous studies have indicated that enhancing parental involvement in neonatal care can positively impact family well-being.
