What this trial studies

The TEALS initiative aims to improve lung cancer screening among American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) by implementing low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) in collaboration with the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. This study addresses the significant disparities in lung cancer incidence and mortality faced by AI/AN populations. By utilizing community-based participatory research, the project seeks to enhance the uptake of lung cancer screening services and promote early detection and treatment. The study will involve adults aged 50-80 with a history of smoking to assess the effectiveness of these tailored screening approaches.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 50-80 with a 30 pack-year smoking history who currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years.

Not a fit: Patients who are unwilling to be screened or are deemed by their primary care doctors as unable to benefit from screening will not receive any benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this initiative could significantly reduce lung cancer mortality rates among Native American populations through improved early detection.

How similar studies have performed: While lung cancer screening has been successful in other populations, this approach specifically targeting AI/AN communities is novel and has not been previously tested.
