ENACT: Integrated hearing and cognitive training for people with mild cognitive impairment
The Effect of the "Empowerment Network for Auditory-Cognitive Training (ENACT) Program" on Auditory Perception and Function, Cognitive Function and Health-related Quality of Life of Persons Living With Mild Cognitive Impairment
This program tests whether adding online auditory training to cognitive training helps people with mild cognitive impairment who also have hearing loss.

What this trial studies
ENACT integrates auditory training into a standard cognitive-training program, delivered via smartphone-based modules with caregiver involvement and peer/goal-oriented supports to optimize engagement. Participants are adults with mild cognitive impairment by Petersen's criteria and at least one-sided hearing impairment on the integrated Digit-in-Noise (iDIN) test, while those with moderate/severe impairment or other sensory limitations are excluded. The intervention arm receives the ENACT program and the comparator receives usual care, with outcomes focused on auditory perception, cognitive function, and health-related quality of life. The program is administered through The University of Hong Kong and uses remote materials to facilitate participation.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are people with mild cognitive impairment who have at least one-sided hearing impairment, own a smartphone, have an available primary caregiver, and have not had formal cognitive or auditory training in the past six months.
Not a fit: Patients with moderate or severe cognitive impairment, other significant sensory impairments, no smartphone access, or recent formal cognitive/auditory training are unlikely to receive benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could improve everyday communication, strengthen attention and working memory, and help slow cognitive decline by jointly addressing hearing and cognitive deficits.
How similar studies have performed: Prior research indicates treating hearing loss can have secondary cognitive benefits, but combining structured auditory training directly into cognitive training as ENACT proposes is relatively novel and unproven.
