What this trial studies
This clinical trial investigates the impact of vitamin D and calcium supplementation on glycemic control and lipid profiles in pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The study will enroll 60 participants aged 18-40 years, between 24-28 weeks of gestation, who will be randomly assigned to receive either the supplements or a placebo for six weeks. The trial employs a double-blind design to ensure unbiased results, with the primary aim of determining whether these micronutrients can improve health outcomes for both mothers and their babies. The diagnosis of GDM will be confirmed through an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are pregnant women aged 18-40 years, diagnosed with gestational diabetes between 24-28 weeks of gestation.
Not a fit: Patients with pre-existing diabetes, chronic kidney or liver disease, or those experiencing multiple pregnancies will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved management of gestational diabetes, enhancing both maternal and fetal health outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have indicated that vitamin D and calcium can positively influence glucose and lipid metabolism, suggesting potential success for this approach.
