What this trial studies

This interventional study investigates how nutritional supplementation with leucine-rich protein and polyunsaturated fatty acids can improve muscle health in middle-aged and elderly individuals aged 50 and above who are at high risk for sarcopenia. Participants will be divided into two groups receiving either animal-based or plant-based oil supplements. The study aims to assess changes in muscle mass and strength, which are critical for maintaining mobility and overall health in the aging population. By focusing on this demographic, the study addresses a significant public health concern as Taiwan approaches a super-aged society.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 50 and older who exhibit signs of muscle weakness or low muscle mass.

Not a fit: Patients with allergies to the supplements, or those with serious health conditions such as cancer, heart failure, or neurodegenerative diseases may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance muscle health and functional capacity in elderly individuals, potentially reducing the risk of sarcopenia-related complications.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promising results with nutritional supplementation for muscle health in older adults, indicating that this approach has potential for success.
