What this trial studies

This study investigates how kangaroo care, which involves skin-to-skin contact between an infant and caregiver, affects the vital signs of infants undergoing cardiac surgery. The research aims to determine if kangaroo care can improve oxygen saturation, lower peak heart rates, reduce respiratory rates, stabilize arterial blood pressure, and decrease pain levels in these infants. By comparing infants who receive kangaroo care to those who do not, the study seeks to establish formal standards for implementing this low-cost, low-risk intervention in clinical practice.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are infants over 37 weeks gestational age who undergo cardiac surgery within the first 30 days of life and have closed chest incisions.

Not a fit: Infants with non-cardiac congenital defects or those who are intubated may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could enhance the physiological stability and comfort of infants recovering from cardiac surgery.

How similar studies have performed: While clinical studies on kangaroo care for infants undergoing cardiac surgery are limited, existing literature suggests positive outcomes from similar interventions.
