What this trial studies

This observational study investigates how preoperative blood pressure and intraocular pressure (IOP) are affected by general anesthesia in frail elderly patients undergoing cataract surgery. It aims to correlate these hemodynamic changes with frailty scores to better understand surgical risks. The study hypothesizes that frail patients may experience more significant fluctuations in IOP and blood pressure compared to those who are prefrail. By assessing frailty preoperatively, the research seeks to improve surgical planning and outcomes for this vulnerable population.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are elderly patients aged 65-85 who are undergoing cataract surgery under general anesthesia and have a frailty score of ASA I-III.

Not a fit: Patients with significant comorbidities such as advanced cardiovascular disease, severe respiratory issues, or those with diabetes may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the safety and outcomes of cataract surgery in frail elderly patients by informing better surgical practices.

How similar studies have performed: While there is ongoing research into frailty and surgical outcomes, this specific focus on IOP and blood pressure changes in geriatric cataract surgery under general anesthesia is relatively novel.
